- Day 13 (September 12, 2003) - We got up early to head for our last city on the itinerary, Milan. At breakfast we met two women from Seattle who were backpacking through Europe. They were your stereotypical American tourists, talking a mile-a-minute, complaining about the food and all the things they didn't like about being in Europe, etc. And then complained about how they wish they had boyfriends with whom they could enjoy such a romantic city...After breakfast, as we were checking out, the hotelier looked up at us and said, "Ah, life is beautiful!" I asked him why he was so happy and he said that he looked up and saw Ikuko's big smile and just thought life is beautiful. It turns out that Ikuko had such a big smile on her face because a really cute fish in the fish tank behind the desk was staring straight at her from behind the glass and it made her laugh. So little did the hotelier now that the chain of happiness he was enjoying really originated with the fish that was swimming around in the tank behind him.
After checking out, we caught the train to Milan and arrived at about 1:30 p.m. We dropped our luggage off at the hotel and headed out do a little more shopping. We went to Piazza San
