  • Day 15 (August 11, 2001) - Today we mostly took it easy and headed out to Goodrich, Michigan to visit with my grandparents (father's parents) and my uncles Bob and David.

  • Day 16 (August 12, 2001) - Today we headed out to visit my grandparents' grave (my mother's parents, Grandma and Grandpa Coffey.) Afterwards we went to visit my Aunt Gayle and Uncle Dave. Their little grandson Chad was visiting as well and he kept us all quite busy. In the evening we all went out to dinner together at Ruth's Chris Steak House. It was probably the best steak we've ever had.

  • Day 17 (August 13, 2001) - Today we spent most of the day preparing to hit the road again. In the evening, we went to visit some old friends of my parents in Waterford, Michigan. (of course old means the friendship, not them...) Their two daughters (who are now grown with 5 kids of their own between them) came over to visit as well. I hadn't seem them all in almost ten years. It was great to see everyone doing well and to talk about "the good old days."

  • Day 18 (August 14, 2001) - Today it was off to Canada. We left in the morning, crossed the tunnel from Detroit into Canada and headed first for Niagara Falls. We ate lunch there, took a beautiful boat ride around the water below the falls and then took to the road again. Ten hours later we actually made it all the way up to Quebec! That was the most driving in a single day yet (Ikuko took the wheel for about an hour...) After driving around Quebec for about an hour looking for a place to stay we finally found a cheap but quaint little motel with a room available. We were asleep the moment we hit the bed.

  • Day 19 (August 15, 2001) - We slept in a bit and then headed for downtown Quebec for brunch where we found a very nice little crepe restaurant. It is amazing how much this place reminds me of France. I should have brushed up on my French before leaving home... After lunch we headed south into Maine. We made it to the coast by about 8pm and headed down the coast toward New Hampshire. We stopped briefly in Kennebunk for some lobster. It was then that we started to notice that virtually every motel had their 'no vacancy' sign out. After dinner we continued south and ended up going through New Hampshire and into Massachusetts before finally finding a room.

  • Day 20 (August 16, 2001) - Today we slept in again and headed for downtown Boston about 11am. Our first mission was to have some Boston clam chowder for lunch. Afterwards, we headed out on what is known as the "Freedom Trail." This is a walking path through downtown Boston that takes you through many interesting historical points of interest. We saw the Park Street Church, the Granary Burying Ground where Paul Revere and John Hancock and many others are buried, the Old South Meeting House where the plans where laid for the Boston Tea Party, the Old State House, the Paul Revere house where Paul Revere lived for several years and the Old North Church which is the famous church to which Paul Revere rode to inform his friend Robert Newman to hang two lanterns up in the steeple to inform everyone that the British would be approaching by sea; up the Charles River to Lexington and Concord. After seeing Boston, we headed to a suburb South of Boston to stay with "Shinovie," a friend of Ikuko's. Years ago when Ikuko spent a year and a half living and working in Massachusetts, she and Shinovie worked together. Shinovie is now a full time mom and she and her husband Matt have two boys who keep her very busy. Ikuko and Shinovie had a great time reminiscing about old times.

  • Day 21 (August 17, 2001) - There aren't many pictures for this update because I started fooling around with the digital camera and accidentally erased all of the pictures I had taken up to that point. Technology certainly has its drawbacks...Anyway, we started the day with a delicious Japanese breakfast that Shinovie fixed for us. She even sent us off with a lunch for the road. Arigato, Shinovie!! We hit the road at about 10:30 or so and headed for Plymouth to see the famous Plymouth Rock where legend tells us that the Pilgrims first set foot when they arrived in the New World in 1620. Next, we headed for Cape Cod and stopped in Hyannis to catch a ferry for the island of Nantucket. It was a nice relaxing 2 hour boat ride to the island. It was a beautiful island and once we got there we spent a couple of hours walking around and checking out all the nice shops before catching another ferry back. (This was about where I deleted the days worth of pictures.) Anyway, I did manage to take a few nice pictures of the sunset that we saw on the way back to Hyannis. It was pretty late by the time we got back so we just stopped at a motel in Bournedale.
